An abandoned 130-pound (approx. 59-kilogram) Saint Bernard dog from Nebraska found his forever home all the way up in New York state. After seeing his picture on the internet, a couple fell in love with the gorgeous pooch. And they decided he was more than worth the long trip to bring him into their family.

Jayne and her husband, Geoff, first came across Cosmo’s photo online. The pooch had been born to a breeder who, for unknown reasons, gave him up to Hearts United for Animals. According to a video shared by The Dodo documenting the pup’s first few months in his new home, the couple felt immediately drawn to him.

Bringing Cosmo to their home in upstate New York was no easy task. Jayne had to fly to Nebraska to pick up the Saint Bernard and then drive him back in a rented car. “I was pretty sure that most of the world would think that I was crazy,” she says, laughing in the video.

There was always the possibility that Cosmo wasn’t the right fit for the family. The video shows a nervous Jayne about to meet her new dog for the first time. However, she soon found that she had nothing to worry about, as the two bonded almost immediately. The shelter volunteer even shed a few tears and said she’ll miss Cosmo “a lot” but was happy to see him go to a better life.

The following day, it was road trip time. Initially, the pup was “terrified to get in and out of the car,” according to Jayne, who was traveling with her sister. “It took a harness, a leash, and three people.” But they managed to get the dog across states lines and into his new home.

After the incredibly long drive, it was time for the Saint Bernard to meet everyone. He first saw the family’s two other dogs, Poppy and Grendel. Then it was time to meet the kids, Alice and Owen, with whom he instantly bonded. And finally, his new dad, Geoff, came to say “hello” to the new addition. Jayne’s household also included a few giant rabbits. It seems unlikely that Cosmo will ever feel lonely again!

“He’s never had a really close relationship with humans, but you can tell he loves the kids,” Jayne is heard saying in the video. And the pooch’s love for the kids is easy to notice. As soon as they first meet, he rolls on his side and lets them tickle his belly.

Within days of entering in his new home, Cosmo seems to be getting more and more comfortable. By day four, he’s shown having a blast playing with his sister, Poppy. And he even learned how to get in and out of the car. He also realized how delicious “people food is” and decided toilet water is more delicious than the water provided in his bowl. He is, indeed, a typical dog!

After a week in the house, he found his perfect nap location on the couch. And a couple of months on, Cosmo seemed perfectly integrated into the family home. However, he hadn’t quite figured out stairs yet. He is always excited to share a “special morning snuggle” with his new mommy.

“We want him to have fun, feel like life is an adventure. But also feel safe and loved. I don’t think he’s had a chance to feel any of those things in his life so far. So it’s really nice to be able to do that for him,” Jayne explained at the end of the heartwarming video.
