New York Govenor David Paterson is very unpopular among New Yorkers, says a new poll released on Wednesday by Cornell University, NY1 News, and the New York Times.

The poll found that only 30 percent of New Yorkers currently approve of the work done by the Democratic governor who took office more than one year ago after former Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned amidst a prostitution scandal.

Seventy-one percent said Paterson does not deserve to be elected in the upcoming 2010 election. When asked, 58 percent of the 1,057 respondents could not think of one good thing that Paterson has done.

Based on other figures gathered, the pollsters attribute the low rating to the ailing economy and fears that Paterson is not able to deal with the situation.

The poll was conducted from May 29 to June 3, before the shakeup in Albany on Monday that toppled the Democrat-ruled State Senate and left Republicans in control.

The poll also found that New Yorkers in general think that New York State is on the wrong track by a margin of 71 percent. Also, the majority have a negative view of New York’s economy, with 37 percent saying that the state’s economy is doing “fairly bad” and 23 percent saying it is “very bad.”

When asked what problems they want the governor to focus on, the most common responses were unemployment, taxes, and the economy.
