The surveillance footage posted to Facebook from a PEMEX gas station about a year ago in Tamaulipas, Mexico, shows what looks like a terrifying situation unfolding. It’s dark and looks to be the middle of the night when two aggressors emerge from the shadows and close in on a lone gas station attendant at the pumps, demanding his keys to open the store and rob the register.

Soon, the scene begins to get vicious, as the men begin to assault him, and he tumbles to the ground. Yet, there is an unexpected turn to the story when a lone hero intervenes to save the day.

Out of nowhere, a white dog rushes in from the left side of the picture to defend the gas station attendant, attacking the robbers and successfully driving them off.

It turns out that the gas station’s K-9 guardian angel is in fact also its mascot. Randy the dog was adopted by the store’s owner, Gerardo Aguilar, after winning the hearts of all the employees. “If it weren’t for Randy, who knows how things would have ended,” he told The Dodo.
Watch the actual footage taken during the attempted robbery:

The amazing story started two years prior when the white dog, which seemed to be completely on his own in the world, showed up at the service station one day. The workers could tell that the dog had had a rough time, as he was emaciated and very scared of people. Over time, though, they managed to gain his trust, and soon he became a fixture of the place.

“We fed him, bathed him and got him vaccinated,” Aguilar told The Dodo. “We adopted him. Now he lives here, and is cared for by all the workers.” Better than a single forever family, Randy hit the jackpot and got everyone who works at the store to dote on him.

Even the customers have become big fans. One regular customer, Nuria Arellano, said that she goes out of her way to fill up her car at this specific gas station so she can see Randy. “He makes it a better experience,” the customer explained. “I always call him, and he gets in the door of my truck and brings his face to mine.”

Though Aguilar and his employees never adopted Randy with the idea of turning him into a guard dog, they were impressed with his steely performance on the night of the assault. Randy was asleep in the storeroom when the attack took place, but it didn’t take him long at all to figure out something was wrong and defend his home and his owners.

“We were surprised to see how he reacted, and of course we are proud of him,” Aguilar said. “He shows us how grateful and happy he is with us.” While Aguilar and his team will be looking at their canine co-worker in a new light, customers like Arellano think the dog’s story could be a model for Mexico’s other strays.

“It would be wonderful if the culture changed and there were more rescued puppies at other gas stations and other stores,” Arellano said. “Let’s hope this happens one day.” In the meantime, Randy hasn’t only become a local hero. The video that Aguilar posted of him rescuing the attendant on Facebook has gained over half a million likes.

As Aguilar wrote in the post, “‘Randy’ is a dog [we] rescued some time ago and now lives at the gas station. He intervened in an assault, defending the pump attendant and his home, not all heroes wear a cape!”
