With iPods, laptops, cell phones, cameras, and portable gaming systems, we have a growing number of devices that constantly need to be recharged. Plugging directly into an outlet is simple enough, but when you’re away from a power source (or experiencing an outage) your energy-hungry gadgets won’t last long without recharging.

The following products effectively power your rechargeable devices in an eco-friendly way without an electric outlet. Even if you find yourself near a reliable source of electricity, these chargers give you an option that preserves natural resources.

Nokia’s Eco-Friendly Bike Charger

Nokia recently unveiled its Bicycle Charger Kit which captures the energy from a moving bicycle to power your mobile gadgets. The kit consists of a Nokia Bicycle Charger DC-14, Nokia Phone Holder for Bicycle CR-124, and a Bottle Dynamo.

The charger is designed to be used with Nokia handsets that have a 2mm charger jack—such as the E72 or X6—but adding a micro USB adapter will make the bike charger able to power up a wider variety of gadgets. Free and efficient charging is achieved at speeds starting at about 4 mph, and Nokia says that a 10-minute bike ride at 6 mph will generate enough power for a nearly half-hour phone conversation.

While Nokia’s isn’t the first bike charger, the well-known brand name is sure to generate interest in this alternative charging method. The Nokia charger goes for about $18 in Kenya where it was first unveiled, according to the BBC, and will be available for purchase worldwide by the end of the year.
