Following the indictment of Christopher Steele’s main source, corporate media has been desperately trying to distance themselves from their reporting on the Steele dossier. The general theme they’ve adopted is that although the dossier is now discredited, that in no way undercuts the FBI’s Russia investigation.
These attempts at distancing were once again highlighted in a recent article by New York Times reporter Charlie Savage, who claimed that “the available evidence indicates that the dossier was largely tangential to the Russia investigation.”
But these self-serving defensive takes are specifically designed to hide the significant impact the Steele dossier and Steele himself actually had on events leading up to and following the 2016 presidential election.
Without the Steele dossier, the Carter Page FISA warrant would not have been issued. It’s also likely that without Steele, there would have been no Crossfire Hurricane investigation, no Intelligence Community assessment, or a Mueller investigation.
