On a national level, the U.S. housing inventory made impressive gains in December 2025, marking the 26th consecutive month-over-month increase, according to a Jan. 8 Realtor.com report. However, an analysis of the past year found that these gains varied widely depending on region.
In December 2025, the number of active listings nationwide was up by 12.1 percent from a year earlier, the report shows. Inventory growth, which surged to 30 percent during the late spring and early summer, began tapering off afterward.
