Badly Beaten, Emaciated Dog Transforms After Human Foster Mom Gives Him First Meal

September 9, 2019 Updated: September 14, 2019

There are literally millions of stray, abandoned, or neglected dogs that end up in shelters each year. For these shelters, the burden of saving so many animals and then adopting them out to loving homes becomes practically impossible. A badly abused dog named Rudy was in so much pain when he arrived at a Houston shelter that he almost didn’t make it.

Rudy was hurt so badly that he was scheduled to be put down. If it weren’t for local non-profit organization Houston Street Dogs, this dog would have become part of the grim statistic of over 670,000 dogs euthanized each year, per the ASPCA. The volunteers from HSD got Rudy out of the shelter just before he was to be put to sleep and placed him with foster mom Kelly Williams.

When Williams first met Rudy, he was clearly terrified of humans. As Williams explained in a heartbreaking YouTube video, “Rudy had been abused. He had injuries consistent with severe beatings including a broken hip.” Just as bad, Williams’s video showed that all of Rudy’s ribs were visible, demonstrating how emaciated he was.

As though of all this weren’t bad enough, he was suffering from “severe eye and ear infections, worms, pneumonia, mange, and skin infections.” How could this little pup survive against such awful odds? For him to make it, his foster mom would have to pour all her love and affection into his care.

As Williams welcomed Rudy into her home, where she had fostered several other desperate cases, it was clear that the first order of business was to give him love and food. As she gave Rudy his first meal of rotisserie chicken and grain-free dog food, the puppy was clearly in heaven, with his tiny tail wagging away.

It was impossible to tell how long it had been since he had eaten a proper meal, but given his skeletal appearance, it had probably been quite a while, if ever.

Williams did her best to give Rudy attention, safety, and regular food, and he began to bounce back after his brush with death. But while Rudy was surviving, he needed a lot more to be able to thrive. As Williams wrote via Facebook, “Along with good food and lots of love Rudy’s life now consisted of … lots (and lots!) of visits to our vet … and lots (and lots!) of medication.”

The other thing he had likely never had on the streets was the possibility of sleeping in a safe, comfortable place, and now he was catching up on lost time with “hours, days, and weeks” of shuteye.

Among the many procedures Rudy had was heartworm treatment via injection, getting his vaccinations, and getting neutered. But as happy as he was, there was one thing missing. Rudy’s abuse had left him with a painful left hip, which prevented him from playing with foster siblings. Raising money online, Williams managed to get the money necessary for a bionic hip.

But all the work has paid off and Rudy has made an incredible recovery thanks to the undying devotion of Williams and the donors. In June 2018, three years after his first hip operation, Rudy had his other hip replaced to enable him to move around easily without pain. While Williams’s original commitment was only to foster him, she just couldn’t let go of this amazing dog.

These days, Rudy runs around with his foster siblings—a family full of animals “that nobody else wants,” as Williams put it via YouTube. Williams encourages everyone to foster themselves or support others who do. She quotes Mahatma Gandhi at the end of her video, sharing the view “that the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Rudy’s eyes say it all. This little guy has been through so much since he was pulled off doggy death row with hours to…
