Commentary
In 399 B.C., at the Heliaia, the principal court of Athens, an elderly man addressed a jury of his peers. Accused of impiety and corrupting the youth, the man, aged about 70, said he was innocent, guilty only of making enemies by arguing that the men of greatest repute in Athens were foolish, “and that some inferior men were really wiser and better.”
