A week of events celebrating the men and women of the armed forces, Fleet Week 2011 will commence with a parade of warships along the Hudson River on Wednesday, May 25. The events are centered around the Intrepid, Sea, Air & Space Museum, a retired aircraft carrier docked at Pier 86 on Manhattan’s West Side. The week culminates in an annual Memorial Day commemoration ceremony on Monday, May 30, which includes the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag on the Intrepid’s flight deck, the playing of taps, a ceremonial wreath laying, 3-volley rifle salute and a military flyover.

Tickets to the Intrepid: $22. For a full list of events visit www.intrepidmuseum.org

Rarely Seen 18th Century Pastel Portraits on View

Although pastel works are technically just drawings, 18th century pastel portraits are often highly finished, large, brightly colored, and elaborately framed, evoking oil paintings, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Forty pastels from the collections at the Met and other museums, and from private collections in Boston and New York, went on display beginning Tuesday, May 17, through August. “The powdery pastel crayons are particularly suited to capturing the fleeting expressions that characterize the most life-like portraits,” according to the Met.

Tickets for adults: $20, children under 12 are free. For more information visit: www.metmuseum.org.

American Ballet Theater: ‘Giselle’

American Ballet Theater’s “Giselle” debuts at the Metropolitan Opera House on Friday May 27 at 7:30 p.m., with performances running through Thursday June 2. A celebrated Romantic-era opera with music by Adolphe Adam (1805–1856), “Giselle” tells the tale of a peasant girl who prematurely dies, and as a spirit, protects her love on earth. The role of Giselle, often described as the Hamlet of the ballet world, requires an exquisite stylist with daring dramatic and technical skills, according to American Ballet Theater.

Tickets: $20-$195. For more information visit www.metoperafamily.org.
