Canada has climbed out from the unemployment hole that left the country with record job losses in the wake of the global economic downturn that began in the fall of 2008.
Employment rose by 93,000 in June, pushing unemployment to 7.9 percent, the lowest it has been since January 2009, reports Statistics Canada, the nation’s statistics agency.
With those gains, the Canadian labor market has all but recovered from job losses related to the downturn. However, the country is still far from the 6.2 percent unemployment rate in October 2008 because of the large increase in people entering the labor force over that period.
Most of June’s job increases, 60,000, occurred in Ontario, the country’s economic engine, but 30,000 jobs were also created in French-speaking Quebec. While some maritime provinces experienced some job losses, the rest of the country has remained relatively stable.
