Teen accidentally kills brother: A 16-year-old teen shot and killed his younger brother after he thought he was an intruder.
A 16-year-old boy accidentally fatally shot his 12-year-old brother in Orlando, Fla., according to reports over the weekend. Police said they will not file charges in the case.
Sgt. Jim Young said that while there are no charges, an investigation is underway, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
“A 16-year-old and 12-year-old were home and there was a firearm in the house, and the 16-year-old feared that the place was being broken into. He fired a shot and it killed his brother,” Orlando homicide detective Mike Moreschi told ClickOrlando.com.
The shooting took place during the afternoon inside in a home on Portofino Drive in a gated community in Lake Nona.
Moreschi said the teen “is devastated, obviously. His parents are devastated.”
Elaborating on the incident, Moreschi said the teen “heard some noises” and thought than an intruder entered the home, reported WFTV.
“He heard some noises and he called out for his brother and he didn’t answer and so then his brother startled him,” he said. The teen then shot and hit his brother before he realized what he had done and called 911.
The boy was sent to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where he was later pronounced dead.
“This is everybody’s business because it’s in our neighborhood,” said neighbor Ana McKitterick, according to the Sentinel.
“As a parent, it breaks your heart,” McKitterick added. “It’s very sad.”
