Obama blasts GOP: President Barack Obama blasted the GOP over not coming to an agreement over how to deal with the sequester cuts that come into effect on Friday.
President Barack Obama slammed Republicans on Friday over the automatic sequestration cuts that are going into effect on Friday, referring to the policy as “dumb.” He said that a “Jedi mind meld” would be the only thing that could work in getting the GOP to reach a deal.
“I know that this has been some of the conventional wisdom that’s been floating around Washington,” Obama told reporters after a meeting with Congress leaders, according to NBC News.
The meeting between the two parties lasted less than an hour and no immediate results were produced, according to The Associated Press. Obama wants a deal that will simultaneously raise taxes and cut out billions of dollars from entitlement programs.
Obama added: “Even though most people agree that I’m being reasonable, that most people agree that I am presenting a fair deal—the fact that [Republicans] don’t take it means that I should somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right.”
House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, said after the meeting that “the discussion about revenue in my view is over. It’s about taking on the spending problem here in Washington,” according to AP. And Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, also a Republican, noted that there will not be any “last-minute, back-room deal and absolutely no agreement to increase taxes.”
But the intransigence on behalf of Congress hampered any compromise, Obama claimed.
“I’m not a dictator. I’m the president,” he said, according to NBC. “So ultimately if Mitch McConnell or John Boehner say ‘I need to go to catch a plane,’ I can’t have Secret Service block the doorway, right?”
The president said the sequester cuts, worth around $85 billion, will cause pain, but Americans could endure it. “We will get through this,” Obama said. “This is not going to be an apocalypse, I think, as some people have said. It’s just dumb. And it’s going to hurt.”
