TORONTO—Artist and realtor Carin Bacher had tears in her eyes as she described the beauty of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Sony Centre on Sunday afternoon.
“When I was watching the second number I thought, ‘it is so beautiful it makes you want to cry,’” she said.
“It was absolutely phenomenal. It warms your heart and it transports you to another place in another time. It was a beautiful show.”
Watching the dancers perform with such joy deeply touched Ms. Bacher, who works in glass flamework and in totem pole and mask carving.
“I think it warms the heart to see the joy of the performers while at the same time we are somewhat saddened that it can’t be universally shared,” she said.
“For the people on the stage, to let that joy come out through sharing what they are doing, that is what creative performance is.”
“[It] is beautiful, is harmonious, it is something you would not expect necessarily, … it is so harmonious and so cohesive,” she said.
The colours and costumes in the show were also something to marvel at for Ms. Bacher.
“The costumes are absolutely phenomenal, and they are all different …The entire production uplifts the spirit.”
She enjoyed the performance so much, in fact, that the two-and-a-half-hour show passed by so quickly for her.
“You do want more. You don’t want it to end.”
True to its Mission
Based in New York, Shen Yun was formed by a group of classical Chinese artists who came together with a mission to revive the true, divinely inspired culture of China, according to the Shen Yun website.
Through the performance, Ms. Bacher said she reinforced her belief that “you do what you can to stand up … to stand up for what you believe is right.”
“I think Shen Yun in and of itself is a shining example of people standing up and being counted for what they believe in, and that is a right thing.”
Everyone, Ms. Bacher said, should come and see the show, “and appreciate it for what they find within it and within themselves.”
