LOS ANGELES—Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company received a standing ovation at its sold-out performance Jan. 25 in Los Angeles at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
Interior designer Nancy Norris and businessman David McCarthy were there. Ms. Norris said, “Incredible! It’s just exquisitely beautiful; the costumes, the composition … beauty, truly wonderful, thank you.”
Shen Yun’s team of masterful digital artists creates the animated backdrops that take one on a journey through the mountains and various regions of China.
Having longed to visit China, Ms. Norris said, “the scenery is exquisite in itself … the scenery is as in my dreams and my reading, at its best, with peace.”
Each colorful silk costume is meticulously crafted. “The costumes are so fluid and just beautiful, just beautiful. The motion, everything, is in harmony,” said Ms. Norris.
Classical Chinese dance is rich with expressive power, embodying traditional aesthetic principles with sophisticated dance movements where the purity and inner beauty of the dancer shines through the performance, according to the Shen Yun website.
Ms. Norris said she loved the entire performance and she was most moved by the dancing; “because that’s what I’m the least familiar with, and somehow that’s what is really reaching me in here (touching her heart).” “It’s just so beautiful, and the men, of course, with their strength and everything, but the women are so beautiful, so dainty, yet strong, enduring, etc. It’s exquisitely beautiful.”
Ms. Norris said she would want the artists to know, “It’s kind of beyond—it makes me choky (emotional), it’s so beautiful. So I thank you.”
The Shen Yun Orchestra is comprised of internationally acclaimed musicians and combines the spirit, beauty, and distinctiveness of Chinese music with the precision, power, and grandeur of the Western symphony orchestra. The result—two great traditions producing one refreshing sound, according to its website.
As someone who’s deeply interested in the arts, Mr. McCarthy said, “The treat for me tonight was to see this wonderful transition in dance.”
“I’ve seen this in music, but now I see it in dance, and we’re grateful … for this transition,” said Mr. McCarthy.
