Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh fired his government on Sunday as street protests against his 32-year rule continue.

Yemen’s state news agency made the announcement saying that the Cabinet would continue working until a new one was formed.

The statement follows the deaths of 52 anti-government protesters who were shot dead by rooftop snipers in the capital of Sana'a, on March 18.

Human rights groups said that gunmen fired at protesters at midday while security forces stood by observing.

Doctors at the scene told Human Rights Watch that more than 350 people were wounded.

Before the president announced his Cabinet decision, the Yemen ambassador to the United Nations had resigned in protest against the unwarranted violence. This move follows similar defections by both ministers of human rights and tourism, and other Yemen top officials.

Since demonstrations began in February, following the revolts in Egypt and Tunisia, at least 80 people have been killed in Yemen, according to Amnesty International.
