The Victorian Liberal and National parties have proposed capping senior public sector executive salaries at just under $600,000 (US$429,000), arguing the move would curb what they describe as excessive pay in the state bureaucracy.

Under the plan, the base salary for new senior public sector executives would be capped at the level of the Supreme Court chief justice, currently $598,248.
