Toronto City Councillor Confirms He Is Under Police Investigation

Toronto City Councillor Parthi Kandavel says he is being investigated by provincial police over unspecified allegations.

Kandavel, who represents Scarborough Southwest, said he can’t disclose the allegations against him. He said he learned he was under investigation on the afternoon of May 8.

“On Friday afternoon, I was surprised to learn of an OPP investigation into allegations against me. I recognize this is difficult news and hope to resolve the situation quickly,” Kandavel posted on social media on May 10.

“I’ve worked hard to earn the trust of the people of Scarborough Southwest, which I take seriously. I’ve strived to maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity and will address any allegations that suggest otherwise.”

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has so far not released details related to the case.

Kandavel’s job history includes a longtime career as an elementary school teacher as well as a previous role as trustee with the Toronto District School Board. He won his seat following a 2023 byelection where he replaced outgoing councillor Gary Crawford.
