In the new system, yellow alerts indicate hazardous weather events that may lead to damage, disruption, or health impacts likely to be moderate, localized, or short-term. Meanwhile, orange alerts are for severe weather likely to cause significant impacts that can be major or widespread or may last a few days, and red alerts are for very dangerous and potentially life-threatening weather that will cause extreme impacts with the potential of being extensive and prolonged.
Specifically, the Barrie area is forecast to experience as much as 10 centimetres of snow starting the evening of Nov. 30 and ending Monday morning, Dec. 1, with occasional “near zero visibility.” Locations having the same forecast include London and its surrounding areas, various parts of both northern and southern Huron County, southern Bruce County, Owen Sound and northern Grey County, Newmarket and northern York Region, and parts of both northern and southern Perth County.
Further north, Agawa-Lake Superior Park is projected to see 20 to 30 centimetres of snow with near-zero visibility at times starting late Monday morning, Dec. 1, and continuing into Dec. 2, with the same forecast for White River-Dubreuilville and Wawa-Pukaskwa Park.
On the B.C. north coast, Environment Canada issued special weather statements for snow and potential freezing rain in locations including Kitimat and Terrace for Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, along with a yellow alert for 15 to 20 centimetres of snow in Stewart.
In addition, Environment Canada forecast high winds up to 90 kilometres per hour along with 15 to 35 centimetres of snow and 30 to 50 millimetres of rain along the Atlantic Coast and throughout Nova Scotia from Dec. 2 to 3. In Prince Edward Island, winds of 60 to 80 kilometres per hour and 15 centimetres or more of snow are forecast for Kings County, Prince County, and Queens County on Dec. 2 and 3.
It noted that P.E.I., Ontario, and Nova Scotia may experience damaged power lines and broken tree branches along roads as a result of high winds and that drivers should check conditions before setting out and should exercise caution while driving.
