SYDNEY—A powerful undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck near New Caledonia in the South Pacific on Aug. 29, creating small tsunami waves, officials in the region said.
The quake struck at a shallow depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers) some 230 miles (372 kilometers) east of the New Caledonian capital, Noumea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was initially reported as magnitude 7.
