Poilievre Heading to US to Discuss Trade, Promote Auto and Energy Sectors

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will be travelling to the United States to advocate for Canada’s automotive and energy sectors, shortly after he wrapped up a trip to the United Kingdom and Germany.

The week-long trip will start March 13 in Detroit, Michigan, where Poilievre will meet with auto industry leaders to advocate for “an integrated North American auto sector and tariff-free trade that protects Canadian jobs,” according to a March 11 press release from the Conservative Party.

After holding a press conference nearby in Windsor, Ont., on March 15, Poilievre will travel to Houston, Texas, the next day to meet with energy executives and visit an energy facility. On March 17, Poilievre will meet with state officials, energy, agriculture, and business leaders in Austin, Texas.

Poilievre will wrap up the trip by delivering a keynote speech on the Canada-U.S. relationship in New York on March 19. He will not be travelling to Washington, D.C., to meet with officials from the White House.

“Over the course of the week, Mr. Poilievre will be advocating for Canada’s auto and energy sectors while leveraging relationships with Canada’s partners across the border, fighting for tariff-free trade and promoting Canadian resources to make both our countries stronger, safer and richer,” says the release.

Conservative MP Jamil Jivani had travelled to the United States in February to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Jivani’s long-time friend Vice President J.D. Vance. He also met with senators from several states that border Canada, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and representatives from businesses and industries that employ Canadians.

Poilievre recently wrapped up a week-long trip to the UK and Germany, his first trip overseas as party leader, where he met with several British MPs and members of the UK business community. He also gave a speech in London where he promoted a closer alliance between the Commonwealth nations of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom (CANZUK).

Poilievre then travelled to Berlin, Germany, to give a keynote speech on the transatlantic relationship, and met with German officials and business leaders. He also travelled to a liquid natural gas facility on the North Sea coast.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Bardufoss and Oslo in Norway from March 13 to 15, where he will observe the Norwegian-led NATO Exercise Cold Response. He will also meet with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to discuss the countries’ relationship.

Carney will then travel to London, United Kingdom, where he will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister’s Office added that Carney will remain in Europe until March 22 for “personal commitments.”
