Kia Canada is recalling more than 18,000 SUVs nationwide due to a manufacturing flaw that could cause the vehicle to “move when it’s parked,” Transport Canada says.
An estimated 18,567 Kia Telluride SUV models from 2020 to 2024 are affected, according to the government-issued recall notice.
A manufacturing issue with the axle shaft(s) on certain vehicles could result in the splines becoming damaged, the notice said.
“If this happens, the vehicle could move when it’s parked and the parking brake isn’t applied,” the March 28 notice reads. “A parked vehicle that moves suddenly could create the risk of an injury or a crash.”
Owners of the Kia SUVs in Canada will receive notification and instructions in the mail. The notice urges vehicle owners to take their vehicles to a dealership for an electronic parking brake software update as soon as they can.
Until then, Kia recommends all Telluride SUV owners “reduce the safety risk” by using the parking brake whenever they park.
Kia America has issued a much more extensive recall in the United States, with more than 427,000 of the Telluride models impacted by the same defect, according to the Associated Press.
Kia Telluride owners can enter their vehicle’s 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) here to see if the recall applies to them. The VIN can be found on the driver’s side door frame of the vehicle.
The latest recall comes one month after 15 automotive companies issued safety recalls for thousands of vehicles, including a number of luxury sedans. There were also recalls by Toyota and Honda in February.
