The Chinese brands are spreading their models faster than European, Japanese, and American manufacturers, says the CEO of Everything Electric.

Australia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) show will grow twice as big in 2024 due to increased local demand.

The organisers of the Everything Electric show, formerly known as Fully Charged Live, said they had to move to a larger venue next year to accommodate more products and interactive elements.

The 2024 show, to be held at the Sydney Showground in February, will display cars from twice as many manufacturers compared to this year’s and deliver more test drives to showgoers.

“One of the key features of our shows is test drives, and being able to do that from somewhere like Sydney Showground is much easier, and we think we can run several thousand test drives there,” Everything Electric CEO Dan Caesar said in comments obtained by AAP.

“At our biggest show in the UK, we managed to run between 2,500 to 3,000 test drives a day. So we’re trying to get up to that scale as quickly as we possibly can in Sydney.”

The organisers said the show’s expansion was proof that Australians’ interest in renewable energy and electric transport was catching up with other countries.

They were relieved to see twice as many manufacturers sign up to participate in the 2024 show, with many more car models to be presented to consumers.

“Tesla and BYD have really started to flex their muscles globally and in Australia, and the whole market is being transformed,” Mr. Caesar said.

“The Chinese brands, in particular, have now got the product. They’ve got the ability to get that product into different countries, and they’re doing it incredibly quickly compared to European, Japanese or American manufacturers.”

The event will take place between Feb. 9 and Feb. 11, 2024, and will also feature electric bikes and scooters, solar products, battery storage, and energy-efficient appliances.

Surge in EV Sales in 2023

Everything Electric’s announcement comes as Australia sees a significant increase in EV sales in 2023.
According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, over 80,000 new EVs were sold between January and November 2023, up from 28,326 at the same time last year.

Tesla continued to be the most popular EV in Australia, followed by two Chinese car manufacturers–BYD and MG, and Volvo.

Australian consumers bought 27,418 Model Ys and 16,506 Model 3s during the year, while BYD managed to sell 10,286 Atto 3s.
Chinese automakers tried to win more Australian market share in 2023, starting an EV price war, which brought the prices of some models down to below $40,000 (US$27,000), yet they also suffered recall problems due to technical issues.

Despite EVs becoming more popular, petrol, and diesel cars still accounted for 92.8 percent of all new vehicles sold during the year.
