Australia’s Global University Rankings Slide as Asia Gains Ground

Twenty-five of Australia’s 36 universities fell in the latest QS World University Rankings.

Australia’s international reputation in higher education has taken a hit, with 25 out of 36 universities slipping in the 2026 QS World University Rankings.

The decline comes amid intensified global competition—particularly from universities in Asia—which saw many institutions in the region climbing higher this year.
