An alligator in South Carolina was caught on camera climbing up and scratching the front door of a South Carolina home the morning of May 2.

The homeowner, Jamie Bailey, wasn’t home during the strange visit.

Neighbors and passersby captured video of the reptile climbing the front door of her Moncks Corner house.

“He was trying to climb the fence a couple times, tried to climb somebody’s door. It was pretty funny, actually,” Gary Rogers, a witness who was walking his dog, told WCIV. “I didn’t know alligators could actually climb. And this alligator looked like he was really trying to make an attempt to get over the fence and into this woman’s pool in the backyard.”

“And then when it went over to the house, it was up around the doorbell area,” he said.

He also said the gator was wandering the cul-de-sac area for almost an hour.

“The gator was not aggressive at all. He was just kind of trying to find his way out. I mean he was caught between fences, in between a couple of houses. Had no place to go. Went around the air conditioner a couple of times,” Rogers said.

Bailey told the station that a friend sent her a text message about the strange incident, but she thought she was getting pranked.

“I thought it was a joke,” she said. “And I couldn’t see it on the porch. And then they sent me the video front on and I was in disbelief. Couldn’t believe it. I mean who would have thought—an alligator!”

Neighbors from Moncks Corner said it is not unusual to see ‘gators in Foxbank Plantation, but it is, in fact, peculiar to see a ’gator wandering the cul-de-sac—and a front porch at that.

“I told my husband earlier I said ‘we’re going to get a gator crossing sign—and we’re putting it in the front yard,’” Bailey said.
