WASHINGTON—New York state Rep. Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat, has officially become the Democratic Party’s nominee for mayor of the City of New York in the 2025 general election, following the publication of the final results of ranked-choice voting on July 1.

Mamdani is a 33-year-old immigrant from Uganda of Indian descent, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018 and was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020. After announcing his candidacy in the mayoral Democratic primary contest for the 2025 election, he dramatically rose in the polls—from having just 1 percent support to rivaling the frontrunner, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whom he beat on election night when preliminary results showed him ahead with 43.5 percent support in the first round.
