U.S. motorists are expected to see the lowest gas prices since 2020, according to a new outlook released by GasBuddy on Jan. 6.

The national average for a gallon of gasoline this year is forecast to be $2.97, down 13 cents from 2025’s average of $3.10, according to the 2026 Fuel Price Outlook. This would represent the fourth consecutive annual drop and the lowest annual average in five years.
