Trump Signs Disaster Declaration for Hurricane Irma-Struck US Virgin Islands
Hurricane Irma reached historic proportions on Wednesday, Sept. 6, becoming the only Atlantic or Eastern Pacific hurricane on record with sustained winds of 185 mph for over 24 hours, according to Eric Blake, a scientist with the National Hurricane Center. NOAA
President Donald Trump on Thursday approved a disaster declaration for the U.S. Virgin Islands, after the islands were hit by Category 5 Hurricane Irma.
Federal aid will be sent to the islands to supplement local recovery efforts. The declaration also makes federal funding available for individuals affected on the islands of St. John and St. Thomas.
