Meloni was also positive about the proposal that included a security guarantee for Ukraine similar to NATO’s Article 5, which treats an attack on one NATO member as an attack on all.

WASHINGTON—U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and seven European leaders to the White House on Aug. 18 to explore paths to end Russia’s war with Ukraine.
During the meeting, Trump said the United States would help provide security guarantees to Ukraine after the war to prevent future aggression.
“I had a very good meeting with distinguished guests,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after the meeting.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Washington ahead of a planned meeting at the White House with President Donald Trump on Aug. 18.
Trump seeks to mediate a deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing since February 2022. His meeting with Zelenskyy follows talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Aug. 15.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff on Aug. 17 said that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed at the Aug. 15 Alaska peace summit to allow U.S. and European allies to grant Ukraine security protections similar to NATO’s collective defense mandate as part of an impending deal to end the war.
“We were able to win the following concession: That the United States could offer Article 5-like protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in NATO,” Witkoff said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
The special envoy added that it was the first time the U.S. side “had ever heard the Russians agree to that.”
