A 13-year-old Oakland, Calif., boy is facing charges of murder and attempted robbery in the Jan. 6 killing of a beloved convenience store clerk, according to local news outlets.
The boy is suspected of shooting 46-year-old Maged Alazzani, a Yemeni immigrant and clerk at Orlando’s Market, a corner store in West Oakland, the East Bay Times, a daily newspaper based in Walnut Creek, reported March 15.
According to the report, authorities say the 13-year-old boy allegedly shot and killed Mr. Alazzani at about 8 p.m. during the robbery.
Authorities say the boy allegedly brandished a firearm. He racked the gun, which loads a live bullet into the chamber for firing, and pointed it at Mr. Alazzani, who reportedly grabbed the barrel of the pistol to try to take the gun away. That’s when authorities say the suspect pulled the trigger and the clerk was shot in the chest.
According to reports, the boy then robbed Jax Liquors, another convenience store, at gunpoint 40 minutes later. He is also suspected of robbing a Target store the next day.
In both robberies, the boy had an accomplice, but authorities have not yet identified him, according to the newspaper.
Mr. Alazzani, a married father of four, was buried according to Islamic tradition on Jan. 9.
The boy, who turns 14 in July, is the youngest murder suspect in recent memory, according to the newspaper.
