Prison Guards Indicted For Beating and Killing a 65-year-old Inmate Without Justification

Three correctional officers working in Western Illinois Correctional Center have appeared in the federal court. They were arrested on charges relating to an assault on an inmate on May 17, 2018. The inmate later died.

Todd Sheffler, 51, Willie Hedden, 41, and Alex Banta, 28, are accused of assaulting an inmate who was being escorted to another location in prison. Larry Earvin, the inmate, was 65 years old at the time and was restrained and handcuffed behind his back when being escorted to another prison unit.
