A group of parental rights advocates in Orange County, California, claim school policies are moving away from teaching math, reading, science, and other core subjects to teach students controversial “emotional intelligence” ideas and are trampling on their constitutional rights to direct the upbringing of their children by not allowing them to opt their children out.
The group has taken legal action against the Newport-Mesa Unified School District for the alleged violation of such rights with a March 24 letter (pdf) by Karin Sweigart, an attorney at Dhillon Law Group, issued on behalf of two groups—the California Alliance For Education and the California Policy Center—regarding a program known as RULER (Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating).
