North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has vetoed a bill that would have significantly expanded funding for private school vouchers and mandated local sheriffs’ cooperation with federal immigration authorities on detaining illegal immigrants.

Cooper, who has consistently opposed the expansion of private school vouchers, announced on Sept. 20 that he had vetoed House Bill 10, a measure passed on Sept. 9 by the Republican-led state Legislature and praised by advocates of school choice.
