California employers will soon be prohibited from firing—or not hiring—workers over their use of cannabis outside of their workplace and work hours.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2188 on Sept. 18 to prevent employers from discriminating against a person in hiring, termination, or terms and conditions of employment based on a drug screening test finding the presence of non-psychoactive cannabis metabolites in their system or for the person’s off-duty use.
