California Gov. Gavin Newsom retaliated against the Trump administration’s offer of preferred consideration for federal funding to some of the most prestigious public and private universities in the nation, by threatening to withhold state funding for any that sign the deal.
Newsom issued a statement on Oct. 2 saying no state funding will be sent to California universities that agree to the federal government’s “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” The 10-point memo, first obtained and reported by The Wall Street Journal, is aimed at combating progressive influence in higher education.
