A man was arrested earlier this week after he was filmed “chugging” a beer and then driving his car on the Venice Boardwalk, striking a pedestrian.

Israel DeAvila was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The pedestrian was not seriously injured, according to news reports.

The incident was captured on video by a nearby bicyclist, which ran on ABC7 news, as well as on social media.

A large crack and dent can be seen on the driver’s windshield in the video.

Soledad Ursua, a Venice Neighborhood Council Board Member reposted the video on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Drink, drive & hit pedestrians. Welcome to Lawless LA,” Ms. Ursua wrote in her post. “The guy will be out on bail in no time.”

Ms. Ursua did not respond to The Epoch Times for comment.

The Los Angeles Superior Court is due to institute a permanent zero-bail system for some offenses Oct. 1, which will allow police to either issue a citation and release, arrest and release or have a magistrate review and recommend, before determining bail, for low-level, non-violent offenses.

Assault with a deadly weapon—such as in the case of Mr. DeAvila’s alleged crime—could either be penalized as a misdemeanor or felony. If it’s the former, he could be released on bail under the new schedule, Ms. Ursua said on X.
