The former FBI Director, James Comey has kept a low profile away from the public eye since his firing back in May this year.
But today on Mon Oct. 23, he confirmed that he is the person behind a Twitter account that was previously anonymous.
Comey posted an image of himself standing alone, in the middle of a roadside in Iowa donning sunglasses and running shoes. He captioned the tweet writing, “On the road home. Gotta get back to writing. Will try to tweet in useful ways.”
The caption signals that Comey is planning to rejoin the national conversation by adding his voice again.
The tweet itself went viral after he posted it Monday morning. As of writing on Monday afternoon, it has gained over 1,993 retweets and over 9,402 favorites.
Comey’s account under the pseudonym “Reinhold Niebuhr,” references the name of a well-known theologian that he wrote about in an undergraduate thesis at the College of William & Mary, Gizmodo reported.
Just last week the account posted two public tweets, one of an image at West Point and the other, a photo from Little Round Top, in Gettysburg, Pa., with the line, “Good place to think about leadership and values.”
But it wasn’t until Comey’s Monday tweet that he himself had formally acknowledged he was the man behind the account.
Benjamin Wittes, a Senior Fellow at Brookings and the editor in chief at Lawfare also confirmed that the account was run by Comey himself.
Comey served as the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, deputy U.S. attorney general, and the top lawyer at Lockheed Martin before he was picked to run the FBI by President Barack Obama. He was abruptly fired by President Trump in May.
