The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a voluntary recall involving certain cashews sold by manufacturer John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. (JBSS), the parent company of Great Value brand products, at multiple Walmart stores across the United States.

Officials said the recall is due to some of the cans of cashews being incorrectly labeled without the proper allergen warnings—specifically not declaring they contain coconut and milk.

The recall involves a specific lot of 8.25 oz Great Value Honey Roasted Cashews, according to a March 12 notice from the federal agency.

The potentially affected products are packaged in a plastic can with a blue wrap around the label and have a “best used by”date of July 8, 2025 GH2.

Additionally, the product’s Universal Product Code (UPC) is 078742133348.

“The recall was initiated after a consumer report of finding coconut cashews within a container labeled as honey-roasted cashews,” the FDA said in the notice.

“An investigation identified that a limited number of incorrect honey roasted cashew labels were applied to the plastic cans of coconut cashews during the manufacturing process,” the agency continued.

While the FDA said no adverse reactions have been reported to date, individuals who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to coconut or milk risk having serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the recalled product.

Consumers who have the product are being warned not to eat it and instead discard it or return the product to a Walmart store for a full refund.

According to the FDA, the recalled cashews were distributed in select Walmart stores across 30 states.

They are as follows: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and West Virginia.

The recalled items were also sold online at Walmart.com.

Allergies Impacting Millions Of Americans

Food allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States, with more than 50 million Americans experiencing allergies each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
They occur when the body’s immune system reacts to specific proteins found in food, according to the FDA. Such reactions can resulting symptoms that range from mild to life-threatening, including hives, lip swelling, or anaphylaxis.

While a range of promising prevention and therapeutic strategies are currently in development, there is currently no cure for food allergies.

Studies show roughly one in 260 Americans have an allergy to coconut, while more than 6 million Americans are believed to have an allergy to milk, according to the non-profit Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE).
