The California Highway Patrol (CHP), as part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s “Real Public Safety Plan”—introduced at the end of 2021—had a record-breaking year in 2023 making more arrests, recovering more stolen items, and conducting more proactive operations than any previous year, according to a report released Dec. 19 from the governor’s office.

According to the report, the CHP made over 1,000 organized retail theft arrests this year—more than double the number in 2022.
