A video showing a masked person in San Francisco attacking a stopped Cruise autonomous vehicle with a weapon has been circulating on social media.

The weapon appears to be either a hammer or a pickaxe. No one was inside the vehicle during the attack.

The video shows the individual hitting numerous areas of the car for about 30 seconds at the corner of Haight Street and Buchanan Street. The attacker then could be seen starting to run away before the video stopped.

The video was posted on X by San Francisco journalist Stuart Schuffman on Sept. 11 and was credited to Instagram user caterywta.

A Cruise spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an email: “We are deeply troubled by the behavior displayed by the individual. While there was no one in the vehicle at the time, our priority is to operate safely under all conditions. We have reported the incident to law enforcement and hope they are able to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.”

The spokesperson confirmed that the vehicle was damaged and a police report was filed.

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) told The Epoch Times that the vandalism took place on Sunday, Sept. 10 at approximately 10:59 p.m.
“When officers [arrived] on scene, they located an autonomous vehicle in the intersection, which had been vandalized. Officers spoke with a witness, who said that they heard a scream and looked out their window to see the suspect standing in front of the autonomous vehicle. The suspect then began vandalizing the vehicle. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arriving on scene,” the SFPD told The Epoch Times in an email.
The police are still investigating the incident. They asked for anyone with information to contact them anonymously at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411.
