The BB-8 is controlled with a smartphone or tablet app and responds to basic voice commands such as “wake up,” and “look around.” It’s just under 5-inches tall and makes cute little Droid sounds reminiscent of R2-D2. Smartphone app-controlled BB-8 toy by Sphero not only reacts to its surroundings and can be programmed through your phone, but now it can “watch” the new Star Wars movie with you.

In the brave tradition of beloved movie robo-characters, the BB-8 droid from the latest “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” attracts fandom that would put to shame many human movie stars.

One of the advantages BB-8 has over its predecessors is that the smart toy comes incredibly close to the real thing, though in a palm-size version.

If you download the latest update for your Sphero BB-8 app, place the toy and your phone in front of a screen and play the latest Star Wars movie. BB-8 will “listen” to the film through the phone and react to specific passages, like rejoicing when Han Solo and Chewbacca appear on screen or shying away frighteningly when the movie’s antagonist Kylo Ren shows up, according to The Wall Street Journal, who tested the feature. Of course, BB also reacts to “seeing” itself on the screen.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has just been released on Apple iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, DVD, and Blu-Ray.
