President Donald Trump arrived in Davos, Switzerland, this morning where he will stay two days to attend the World Economic Forum.
Before heading off to Switzerland, Trump wrote on Twitter that he was planning “to tell the world how great America is and is doing.”
“Our economy is now booming and with all I am doing, will only get better...Our country is finally WINNING again!,” Trump said.
On his first day in Davos, Trump met with British Prime Minister Theresa May, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He will also meet with Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, Klaus Schwab.
In the evening, Trump will have dinner with European business leaders.
Before leaving for Davos, Gary Cohn, the president’s top economic adviser, said at a briefing that “We want the world to invest in America and to create jobs for hardworking Americans.”
“President Trump’s economic agenda has unleashed the U.S. economy and we are growing,” Cohn said.
Since Trump came to office last year, unemployment has dropped to its lowest number since 2000, and GDP (gross domestic product) growth is at 3 percent, a mark that some economists had recently considered unattainable. With the passing of the tax reform bill this month, economic growth is expected to continue to accelerate.
The stock market has added over 5 trillion dollars in value last year alone.
“At the World Economic Forum, we will reiterate America’s commitment to domestic and global economic growth and prosperity, strengthen close ties with other world leaders, and catalyze international business support for the president’s agenda,” Cohn said.
He also said that Trump will tell the other world leaders that “a prosperous America benefits the world.”
“When the United States grows, so does the world.”
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said at the briefing that Trump will also discuss national security issues, including efforts to denuclearize North Korea, and the fight against the ISIS terror group.
On Friday, Trump is expected to meet with Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda and current Chairman of the African Union, “to reaffirm the US-Africa relationship and to discuss shared priorities including trade and security.”
President Trump is accompanied by McMaster, Cohn, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and other senior White House staff on the trip. White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is staying in Washington as the White House is currently working on its immigration plan, which it is set to release on Monday.
