A United Nations panel paid $650 million in reparations on July 29 to those who suffered losses in the 1990 Iraq invasion of Kuwait, according to the U.N. News Center. The money was made available to nine claimants by the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC), and is set to settle damage claims.

According to the U.N. News Service, citing a U.N. press release, the UNCC has disbursed more than $30 billion in compensations, including the recent payout. There are six claim categories, four of which are for individuals, one for corporations, and one set for governments and international organizations.

It adds that the majority of payouts have come through money from Iraqi petroleum, via the Oil-for-Food program, which ended in 2003.
