Two officers of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety helped bring a new life into the world on Saturday, July 15.
They responded to a call for medical help around 00:25 a.m. A woman was on her way to Bronson hospital when she started to give birth. The driver pulled over by Bronson Park and when officers arrived on scene, they found themselves helping with a delivery.
“Sgt. Kristie Hofer was one of the first officers to arrive and recognized the female was having contractions and the head of the baby was beginning to ‘crown’,” the department stated in a release.
With the help of officer Fountain, Hofer delivered the healthy baby boy as paramedics arrived and took to a hospital the mother, father, and the baby, identified only as the Baker family.
“Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to extend our best wishes to the Baker family on the birth of their healthy baby boy,” the department stated.
Kalamazoo is a city in Michigan about 140 miles west of Detroit.
All law enforcement officers in Michigan have to go through a training on assisting in childbirth as part of their basic training, according to the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.
