Eight people were killed in separate incidences during anti-India protests in the Indian-controlled region of Kashmir, Aug. 2 according to the Times of India.

Indian troops shot at and sprayed tear gas at protesters leaving 60 civilians injured, 70 Indian troops were also injured in the clashes making it one of the worst outbreaks of violence over the past two months, according to AP.

A total of 15 people have died in the region since Friday, a curfew continues over the entire valley, according to the Times.

The Indian government has appealed for calm but said it would crack down on lawbreakers, according to both reports.

The demonstrators are protesting Indian rule of the predominantly Muslim region, which has been under contention since it was freed from British rule in 1947.
