According to Indian police, about 30 Tibetan activists were detained in New Delhi after attempting to rush at the gate of the Chinese Embassy on Tuesday.

The incident happened on the eve of the anniversary of the Chinese regime’s clamp down on demonstrations in Tibet ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The activists, wearing headbands, holding placards, and calling out slogans of “Free Tibet,” arrived at the heavily guarded embassy in Chanakyapuri, the capital’s diplomatic enclave, about 11:30 a.m. local time (1 a.m. EST).

“They tried to storm the Chinese Embassy at Shantipath but were detained by the police force. They were taken to Chanakyapuri police station,” Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Dash told Indo-Asian News Service.

According to Dash, the security around the Chinese Embassy was strengthened with more police being deployed in preparation for the 51st anniversary of Tibetan on March 10.
