STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Fredrik Malmberg, Sweden’s Children’s Ombudsman, has produced a notice advising on how to prevent children and youth from being affected by cutdowns. The advice, in the wake of the global financial crisis, is targeting economic decision-makers on municipal and provincial levels.

“Short-term cutdowns often prove expensive in the long run. One needs to draw from the experience from the previous economic crisis,” said the Malmberg, whose job it is to defend the rights of the country’s children.

Sweden experienced a serious economic crisis in the early 1990’s, and investigations have shown that activities for children and youths were heavily affected by cutdowns at the time.

Several reports show that the present economic crisis is likely to affect children and youth in a similar way. The notice from the Malmberg focuses on analyzing the consequences for children and youth before making decisions.
