Sudan’s armed forces carried out two ground attacks on rebels in 24 hours last week, in a village in the western Sudanese region of Darfur, the U.N. News Center reported Saturday.

The second attack, which happened Saturday morning in a village about 50 kilometers (31.1 miles) northeast of South Darfur’s capital Nyala, left five civilians injured and a number of houses burned to the ground, according to the press release.

In response to the attack, the head of the joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping mission in Darfur démarched the government of Sudan.

“Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari démarched the government at the highest level for the attacks on the village to cease,” stated the joint U.N.-AU mission in Darfur (UNAMID), according to the U.N.

The attack Friday caused 200 to 250 civilians to flee to a UNAMID camp in the area for security. The UNAMID workers treated attack victims, sent out fire trucks to extinguish the fires and patrols to the affected area.

UNAMID, was established in 2007 to protect the civilians of Darfur. Fighting in the region over the past seven years has killed at least 300,000 people and caused 2.7 million to flee from their homes, the U.N. estimates.
