A student apparently shot himself at a high school in Minneola, Florida, on Tuesday morning, according to local sheriff’s officials.

The unnamed student was taken to the hospital after an incident at Lake Minneola High School, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said in an update.

The school and nearby schools have been placed on lockdown as a precaution, the office said.

“The school is secure and more updates will be provided as they are available,” the sheriff’s office said.

According to local broadcaster WKMG, the gun was secured and there’s no threat to students. The student’s condition is not known.
“A Lake Minneola High School student took his life this morning in the bus loop with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” school district spokeswoman Sherri Owens told WFTV. “There is no additional threat to students at LMHS or any other school.”

According to WESH, it’s not clear how many students witnessed the shooting.

Lake County school officials added that grief counselors are being sent to the school.

According to the sheriff’s office in an update on Facebook:
There has been one person injured from a gunshot at Lake Minneola High School. The school is secure at this time and we have reason to believe it to be a self-inflicted shot. Lake Minneola High School and others in the area have been placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution as we continue to investigate. The school is secure and more updates will be provided as they are available.
