A student in Ohio who shot himself in his school’s bathroom has died from wounds, police said.

The seventh-grader shot himself at Jackson Memorial Middle School around 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Feb. 20.

He was rushed to the hospital but died late Wednesday, reported the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The boy was identified as Keith Simons, 13.

Keith had a .22-caliber long gun but investigators aren’t sure yet how he obtained it or was able to bring it into the school. The gun came from his mother’s home.

There was a report that Keith had a Molotov cocktail on him but Jackson Township Police Chief Mark Brink denied the claim, calling what Keith had on him in addition to the gun a “distraction device.”

“It is not a bomb, I can tell you that; [it’s] something you could distract people with for whatever reason,” Brink said during a news conference.

Brink also noted that Keith had brought extra ammunition.

Officers aren’t sure if Keith meant to kill himself or if he was preparing for something else, such as an attack on other students.

Brink said that officers are going to go through Keith’s phone as well as other electronics to try to figure out what he was planning, reported Fox8. He also noted that it is going to take quite a bit of time to get through all the evidence and speak to everyone.

The school will remain on alert for the rest of the week.
