The Boston Fire Department tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the five-alarm fire at St. John the Baptist Church in South Boston has caused damages worth about $1,000,000.
Heat exhaustion and injury led six firefighters to be treated by emergency personnel. Of the injured firefighters, one had a neck injury, two had burns, two had cuts, and another was affected by the extreme heat.
“It will be a while if / when Boston fire investigators can get inside to look for a cause and point of origin,” tweeted the department.
The fire chief said the church will likely collapse, according to a tweet from Kelley Tuthill, WCVB reporter.
